Project Description:
This project will install Complete Streets improvements--improved pedestrian crossings and a two-way cycletrack-- on Gillham Plaza from Armour Boulevard to McGee Trafficway. The goals of this project align with KCMO's Complete Street ordinance to make our streets safer and more accessible for all users: bicyclists, pedestrians, transit-users, and vehicles.

Project improvements include:
Traffic calming and improved pedestrian crossings on cross streets
An on-street, two-way cycle track from Armour toMcGee Trafficway
Improved, northbound bus stops at Linwood and at Armour
Upgraded traffic signal at Linwood Blvd and Gillham Plaza
Newly resurfaced roadway
Minimal impact to parking, trees, and existing traffic lanes

What is a two-way cycle track?
Read more about a two-way cycle track design in the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide.

Project Background:
- Previous public engagement process took place through the 2017 Gillham Road Planning Sustainable Places Study
- Recommendations from this plan informed the final project design
- The KCMO staff mobility committee met monthly in 2019 to refine the conceptual design and come up with an implementable project
- Project funding is provided by the Complete Streets set-aside in the 2019-2020 Street Preservation Budget
Traffic Impact:
There is no work occurring at this time. Once construction starts later this spring/early summer, traffic will still be able to travel on Gillham, but the active construction and equipment will result in reduced travel lanes and possibly delays.
Transit Impacts:
- This project will remove three bus stops:
- Two northbound stops: at Gillham Plaza and at Gillham Rd/34th
- One southbound stop: at Gillham Rd/34th
- The northbound bus stops at Armour and Linwood will be preserved and improved.
Project Timeline:
The northern section of the facility from Linwood to McGee Trafficway will be installed in late spring/early summer 2021, along with traffic signal upgrades. This will complete the work for this phase (Armour Boulevard to McGee Trafficway).
