Project Update - 5/1/26

Project Overview

Kansas City Public Works is developing a plan to make Broadway Boulevard, from 31st Street to 43rd Street, safer for the community. This involves a "road diet" project, but staff members are now looking for community feedback to help shape what that project looks like. Through feedback gathered during the "public engagement" phase, the project team has reached a final design for the project, which was shared at a public meeting on September 10, 2025.

Project Design

Kansas City Public Works has 3 main design concepts for this project: Meandering Road, Spanish Rambla-Style Medians or Mobility Lanes. The following design was reached based on feedback from those previous designs:

Features:

• Lane reduction from 5 lanes to 3 lanes (one turning lane)
• Forward angle parking
• Protected mobility lanes from Linwood Boulevard to Westport Road in the form of a two-lane cycle track
• Space for future landscaped median

Understanding the New Configuration:

• Instead of five lanes of traffic, there's now one lane of travel in each direction, with a turn lane in the middle and mobility lanes and parking on the sides
• The new "green crosswalks" are mobility lane crossings - or areas where cars and bicycles can intersect
• Areas marked in red are portions of the road that are for buses and public-transit vehicles only

Public Engagement

A public engagement event was held July 7, 2025. Click here to view the slideshow from that meeting. The project team used feedback gathered during this meeting and through the online survey to reach their final design.
