Construction Update:

Posted 8/22/19:

Public Works staff is currently working with the design team and construction contractor to make sure the soil meets the City’s specifications for stability. Soil testing is standard protocol for every roadway project. The soil is tested at a couple sample sites during the design phase of the project and once the contractors are mobilized on site and the roadway is torn up, we run another round of testing on the soil. Testing the soil stability is important because it is the foundation of our roadway—ensuring that soil stability is up to our specifications maximizes the lifespan of the roadway and reduces maintenance in the future.

Soil stability issues have been resolved and contractor crews are scheduled to return to the construction site on Monday, August 26 to resume work, weather permitting.

Project Description:

NW 72nd Street is located in Platte Woods, south of Lake Waukomis. NW 72nd Street is being replaced from the east side of the I-29 northbound off-ramp to the intersection of N Overland Drive.  The existing roadway east of N Overland Drive to N Polk will remain but a concrete curb will be added to the north side (westbound lane) of NW 72nd Street.

Roadway improvements include:

  • One lane each direction with a continuous center left turn lane
  • New sidewalks
  • New street lighting and traffic signage
  • Public water main replacement
  • New underground storm sewer
  • New concrete drive approaches at all residential and commercial driveways
  • A roundabout at the intersection of N Overland Drive
  • Slope improvements to improve motorist visibility

Traffic Impact*:

NW 72nd Street is currently closed to through traffic. Follow marked detour.

*Businesses are open during construction.
