NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jan. 23, 2020

The City’s effort to improve the lighting throughout the Historic West Bottoms area is being hailed as a beacon of success.

In October, the KCMO Streetlight team accepted the Silver Award from the Kansas City Industrial Council for the West Bottoms LED Streetlight Conversion Project.

The LED Streetlight Conversion Project was a multi-phase project that started in 2017 and wrapped up in 2019. The goal was to convert existing high-pressure sodium vapor streetlights in the Historic West Bottoms area to LED lights and install additional LED streetlights where none existed before. Streetlight staff worked closely with the Historic West Bottoms representatives to determine the most effective way to improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians and to enhance the area’s appeal and safety.

We converted approximately 420 existing fixtures to LEDs, resulting in decreased energy and maintenance costs, and saving $15,000 in electricity and $3,000 in maintenance costs each year.  Check out Streetlights for more information.
