Kansas City is hitting the ground running this spring as crews launch another season of street resurfacing work. Building on more than 1,500 lane miles resurfaced since 2021, the City aims to improve 400 lane miles in the coming year.

This effort will continue Kansas City's long-term investment in safer, smoother streets, from well-traveled corridors like Ward Parkway and The Paseo to neighborhood streets across all six Council districts.

"Potholes are not acts of God, but instead the result of poor infrastructure and planning," said Mayor Quinton Lucas. "The best way to fix our roads isn't just filling potholes; it's strategically resurfacing failing roadways where residents need it most. With a goal to resurface 400 lane miles of Kansas City's roads like Broadway through our city's core, we continue to exceed past results and are creating a city where infrastructure serves everyone equally and reliably."

What to Know:

  • Resurfacing Season Has Begun: Work is underway and will continue throughout 2025.
  • 400 Lane Miles Planned: This year's goal aligns with the City's multi-year commitment to roadway improvements.
  • Data-Driven Decisions: Kansas City uses an advanced pavement analyzer and asset management software to prioritize streets based on need-not just length-ensuring equity and effectiveness.
  • Ongoing Updates Available: A full map of planned resurfacing projects, including an interactive map showing expected work for the fiscal year, is available at KCMO.gov/streets.

What's Being Resurfaced?

While the City does not categorize projects by longest stretch, major arterial streets like Broadway Boulevard, E 12th Street, Troost Avenue, Ward Parkway, and The Paseo are among those expected to see significant resurfacing activity this season. The final list is subject to change as crews respond to evolving road conditions across Kansas City.

How Streets Are Chosen:

Kansas City doesn't simply go by potholes or complaints. Street conditions are analyzed using a high-tech survey vehicle that drives every city block, identifying cracks, bumps, weathering, and other damage. This creates a condition score for each street segment-data that's plugged into the City's asset management system to determine where work is most needed.

Other factors like coordination with utilities, engineering recommendations, and available funding also guide the final project list.

"Kansas City is delivering on its promise to improve infrastructure through smart investment, data-driven decisions, and equity. By focusing on the condition of our streets-not just their location-we're making sure every part of our city sees progress. This work isn't just about pavement, but safety, quality of life, and pride in our neighborhoods," said Interim City Manager, Kimiko Gilmore.

Continuing Public Works initiatives:

  • "Trash to Roads" Initiative: The City is piloting the use of recycled materials like tires and plastics in pavement to extend road life and reduce landfill waste.
  • Better Coordination with Utilities: Contractors must resurface an area if they cut into recently paved streets-preserving quality and reducing repeat disruptions. This resurfacing must comply with SR-1 policy.
  • Speed Humps for Safety: At least 60 new speed humps expected to be installed as part of ongoing traffic calming efforts.

Kansas City's strategic approach-prioritizing technology, accountability, and early planning-continues to set a high standard in public infrastructure investment.
