Out of respect for the memorial services for Firefighter Paramedic Graham Hoffman scheduled for May 2, Kansas City is rescheduling a full-scale emergency response exercise involving a streetcar. This exercise will now be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at approximately 10:00 AM near the future Plaza Streetcar Station.

The exercise supports the City's ongoing commitment to emergency preparedness and interagency coordination as the Streetcar system expands through the Main Street Extension. Kansas City Public Works partners with local transportation and public safety agencies to make this possible.

The training scenario will simulate an incident involving a streetcar and include critical response components such as multi-agency communication, evacuation, medical triage, and extrication of volunteer "passengers."

What to Expect:

  • Exercise timeframe: 10 AM to 12 PM
  • Increased activity in the area: Starting at 7 AM
  • Road closures: Main Street between W 47th Street and Ward Parkway from 9 AM to 1 PM
    • Advance signage will alert motorists and pedestrians.

Media & Observer Information:

Members of the media and other interested observers are invited to attend. Please RSVP using the registration form linked above. All attendees must arrive by 9:30 AM for a mandatory safety briefing. Additional details, including parking instructions, will be shared with registered participants.

This exercise is designed to test and improve emergency response procedures in the event of a streetcar-related mass casualty incident. The initiative is led by Kansas City Public Works and K&J Safety and Security Consulting Services, Inc., with support from:

  • Kansas City Streetcar Authority
  • Herzog Transit Services, Inc.
  • Benesch
  • Kansas City Fire Department
  • Kansas City Police Department
  • RAPT Readiness Media
