National Reaccreditation for Excellence in Public Health

Reaccreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board Highlights Commitment to Quality and Community Health

For Immediate release: Tuesday, October 14, 2025

The Kansas City Health Department is being recognized for its commitment to excellence in public health by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). This reaccreditation highlights the department's dedication to quality, accountability, and continuous improvement in public health services.

PHAB serves as the only national accrediting body for governmental public health departments, providing a framework that ensures departments meet the highest standards of performance. This process is designed to strengthen public health infrastructure and enhance trust between health departments and the communities they serve.

"Kansas City's PHAB reaccreditation was a rigorous yet rewarding process that demonstrates our commitment to measuring our performance and services against the highest national standards," said Marvia Jones, PhD, MPH, Director of Health for the Kansas CityHealth Department. "Since 2013, this process has helped us strengthen our organization from the inside out. While our work is far from over, our commitment to improving the health of Kansas City residents and businesses is deepened by reaccreditation."

"PHAB accreditation not only serves as a credential but also reflects a department's dedication to building healthier communities," said PHAB President and CEO Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MD, MPH, FACEP. "We commend each department for its hard work and vision in meeting today's public health challenges head-on."

The accreditation process evaluates departments against a comprehensive set of standards covering core public health functions, such as chronic disease prevention, health ordinance enforcement, and emergency preparedness. Departments that achieve reaccreditation demonstrate a sustained focus on performance improvement and community-centered practices. Every five years, these departments undergo another review to maintain accreditation status and ensure alignment with national standards and public health priorities.

The Kansas City Health Department was one of the first health departments in the nation to achieve initial national accreditation in 2013. It was also one of the first city health departments to be accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) that same year, making it the first health department in the state of Missouri to receive this accreditation.

Congratulations are due to the Kansas City Health Department staff for their hard work, which has led to this milestone achievement. They are a part of a growing network of nearly 450 accredited health departments across the nation, showcasing the critical role of effective public health systems that prioritize the needs of their communities.
