KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mayor Quinton Lucas
introduced legislation supporting a major expansion of CPKC Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Current, and investing in surrounding development along the Missouri River. The Mayor’s proposal sets in motion a development process for what is expected to be a $1.4 billion project that would cement Kansas City’s riverfront as the premier sports and entertainment district in the country—and one of few in the world that is woman led for women athletes.
“The Kansas City Current presents one of the greatest success stories in our city’s recent history, and CPKC Stadium has already proven that world-class investment in women’s sports pays off,” said Mayor Lucas. “We look to build on the momentum, expanding a stadium district that will draw more visitors, create jobs, help Kansas City compete for more global and national events, and strengthen our riverfront for generations to come.”
The expansion would enlarge the capacity of the Current’s home at CPKC Stadium, construct more parking, trail connections, new shops, and add further mixed-use development. The legislation directs City leadership to negotiate final deal terms with the Kansas City Current, giving the City Council final say on the project.
As assistance, the City would issue bonds, supported by the Current ownership, and include additional investment from the State of Missouri.
The legislation also moves forward broader improvements to the Berkley Riverfront, including trails, public gathering spaces, and amenities along the levee, ensuring expanded outdoor parks and trail space accessible to Kansas Citians and close to the City’s urban core.
Producing thousands of construction jobs, adding new residents, increasing tax revenue, and drawing more visitors to Kansas City, the next phase of the Current’s redevelopment will enhance the playing facility, fan experience, and the ability of all Kansas Citians to enjoy the development and natural attractions of our riverfront.
The ordinance will be reviewed in late June by City Council.
