SunFresh anniversary celebration concludes with statue unveiling June 29
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 28, 2019
City and civic leaders join renowned local artist Ed Dwight on Saturday, June 29, for the unveiling of his specially created statue commemorating the first anniversary of the SunFresh market and redeveloped Linwood Shopping Center. The unveiling takes place at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the shopping center located at Linwood Boulevard and Prospect Avenue, capping a two weekend-long anniversary celebration.
Named “Phoenix Rising Out of the Ashes,” the 16-foot tall sculpture features five figures symbolizing the Linwood neighborhood and the surrounding area’s emergence from stagnation into progress.
Dwight, a Kansas City, Kansas, native, has created more than 100 works of art worldwide. But before he was an artist, he was an astronaut - becoming the first African-American in NASA’s Astronaut Corps. He retired from the military and became an accomplished artist, engineer and author.
The 40,000-square-foot SunFresh opened last year and anchors the revitalized retail center. Nearly $15 million in public and private money was used to turn the once-blighted property into a showcase on the city’s east side. The statue was commissioned through the city’s One Percent for Art Program, where the city must allot one percent of the cost for new building projects to commission a work of art related to the project.
