The department has three broad areas of responsibility to ensure public welfare and safety through the enforcement of codes and ordinances.

• Permit compliance: Sign and demolition complaints, permit compliance, building code violations, and certificate of occupancy violations.
• Development compliance: Land use and development compliance, floodplain violations, and processing of Certificate of Legal Non-Conformance applications.
• Periodic inspections: Safety inspections, billing and collection of fees for elevator equipment, and inspections of parking structures, underground spaces, mobile home developments, and communications towers.
