Kansas City is excited to announce that neighborhood-level planning is back!
Neighborhood-level planning has not been done on a widespread scale by City staff since the neighborhood assessments of the early 2000s.
In 2024, Councilmember Patterson-Hazley lead the effort to create a small group of planners who could work on a one-on-one basis with neighborhoods in Kansas City that have historically been disinvested, are experiencing distress, and who have a high concentration of vacant lots.
The primary component of these plans is a list of short-term, implementable action items related to City services, such as addressing vacant lots and installing traffic calming infrastructure. These neighborhood plans are adopted as an addendum to the area plan in which that neighborhood is primarily located.
Since this pilot program was completed for Washington Wheatley, staff have been working to streamline the process and bring it to more neighborhoods. If you are a neighborhood leader who feels this planning process would be helpful to your community, please fill out the form below.
