Recognize Measles Early

  • Rash — Appears 3–5 days after symptoms begin
If you or your child show these signs, avoid public places and call your doctor immediately before visiting a clinic.

Guidance for Schools & Childcare Facilities

  • Monitor symptoms and update immunization records.
  • Exclude unvaccinated individuals during outbreaks.
  • Promote hygiene and disinfect shared surfaces.

Why Measles Is Serious

  • Highly contagious — 9 in 10 non-immune people exposed will get infected.
  • Can lead to pneumonia, brain inflammation (encephalitis), and death.
  • Spreads through airborne droplets and contaminated surfaces (up to 2 hours).

Tip: Measles is preventable with two doses of the MMR vaccine.

The MMR Vaccine Saves Lives

  • Protects against measles, mumps, and rubella.
  • Two doses offer 97% effectiveness.
  • First dose: 12–15 months; Second dose: 4–6 years.
  • Adults born before 1957 are usually immune.

Been Exposed to Measles?

  • Call your provider before going in.
  • Stay home and avoid public areas.
  • MMR vaccine within 72 hours of exposure can help.
  • Immune globulin (IG) may reduce severity if given within 6 days.
