How to read your ticket. Keep your copy of the ticket. The information on it will tell you your first court date whehter it is payable, or non-payable and requires a mandatory court date and more.

Payable tickets

If your case is payable (a fine amount is printed on the ticket) and it is BEFORE the court date printed on your ticket, you may either:

  • Plead guilty and pay the fine without coming to court;
  • Attend the court date listed on your ticket;
  • Request a first-time continuance at least three (3) days prior to the court date listed on your ticket. (This is the only time a first-time continuance is allowed); or
  • Consult an attorney.

If your case is payable, but it is AFTER the court date printed on your ticket:

  • Your case will be moved to a new court date and it is no longer eligible for a first time continuance.
  • The court will mail a summons ordering you to appear in court to the address on file for you.
  • If you do not appear at the next court date the judge will issue a failure to appear warrant for your arrest.
  • If you want to plead guilty and pay without coming to court, complete the Guilty Plea and Waiver of Counsel form and submit it to the Municipal Court. The court will contact you to let you knos if your case is eligible. If it is, the court will give you the next steps to finish the process. Please check the Payable Violations Fine Schedule. Your ticket must be on this list to be a payable ticket and to be eligible for this process.
  • Or you may choose to consult an attorney.

Non-payable tickets

Your case is non-payable if no fine amont is printed on your ticket or notice. A normally payable ticket also may be non-payable and require a mandatory court date if it was issued with a non-payable ticket, or during an accident.

  • The court date printed on your ticket is a mandatory court appearance. Any penalty would be determined by the judge if you choose to plead guilty in court or if you are later found guilty at trial.
  • If you do not appear at the court date the judge will issue a failure to appear warrant for your arrest.
  • Some cases MAY be eligible for a first-time continuance. You must request a first-time continuance at least three (3) days BEFORE the court date listed on your ticket. This is the only time a first-time continuance is allowed.
  • You may consult an attorney.
