All continuance requests must be submitted at least three (3) days before your court date.

It is the judge's descretion to grant or deny any continuance request. If you do not receive confirmation that your continuance has been approved, you must attend your scheduled court date to avoid a warrant.

 
Continuance Requests Without An Attorney

You may request one (1) first-time continuance of your original arraignment date (your court date listed on the ticket), for cases where continuances are allowed. You may request an in person or a virtual arraignment. Make your request:

  • Online by signing up for Manage My Case on eligible cases.
  • By email
  • By phone: (816) 513-2700

These cases are not eligible for first time continuance, continuance online, by email or phone, or virtual hearing: 

  • Domestic violence
  • Non payable housing code violations
  • Non payable animal code violations

Cases past the arraignment (first court date), also cannot be continued online, by email, or by phone including but are not limited to:

  • Status hearings
  • Jail bond out hearings
  • Bond forfeitures
  • Trials
  • Probation violation hearings
  • Specialty court hearings
  • Legal Aid docket hearings
  • Any hearing after the first setting

Continuance Requests If You Have An Attorney

If you have a private attorney or Legal Aid attorney, they must request the continuance for you.

Pleae follow our Attorney Guidelines and file all written requests at least three (3) business days in advance.

Witnesses and Victims

 Contact the City Prosecutor’s Office for assistance.

Emergency Requests

If you have an emergency, send an email that includes:
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information
  • Case numbers (if available)
  • Explanation of the emergency
  • Any supporting documents

Your information will be forwarded to the judge for review which may not happen until the time of the hearing. You may not receive a response before your hearing. If the judge denies your requst, and you are not present in court, a failure to appear warrant will be issue.
