Cats, dogs, and ferrets that reside in Kansas City, Missouri, are required to be vaccinated against rabies and licensed with the city under Chapter 14 of the Code of Ordinances.
Licensing can be completed at all KC Pet Project locations, through the PetData website, or at *participating veterinary offices.
*Please note that not all veterinarian offices are authorized to process licenses, so be sure to check with your provider in advance.
You will need proof of your pet's current rabies vaccination, such as a rabies certificate, from your veterinarian.
- One-year pet licenses are $10
- Three-year pet licenses are $27. A 3-year license is only available if the pet received a 3-year rabies vaccination in the last 6 months.
Licensing a pet and keeping the license on its collar helps ensure that the owner will be notified if the pet is impounded.
Anyone who locates or recovers a stray animal licensed with the City is encouraged to contact 311 or check PetData and get the owner’s contact information so the pet can be returned to its rightful owner.
Animal-Related Permits
All animal-related permits must be submitted through the City’s Compass KC portal.
- Animal Show Permit
- Commercial Animal Establishment Permit
- Domestic Animal Avocation Permit
- Special Exception Permit for Fowl/Small Animal
- Potentially Dangerous and Dangerous Dogs
