In response to recent storms, temporary measures are in place to assist Kansas City residents with debris disposal and neighborhood cleanup:

  • The Missouri Organics drop-off site at N Main Street & NW Cookingham Drive will be open daily and available free of charge for the next two weeks for Kansas City residents.
  • The former drop-off site at 1815 N. Chouteau Trafficway will temporarily reopen from 8:00 AM through 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

At this time, the city will not be offering curbside debris pick-up services. Residents are encouraged to utilize the designated drop-off sites to help ensure a faster and more efficient cleanup process.

Your Weekly Trash Service Basics

Kansas City provides weekly curbside trash and recycling pickup for single family homes and apartments with 6 units or fewer. Our goal is to make it easy to keep your property clean and your neighborhood looking great.

Weekly Service and Schedule:

  • Frequency: Residential trash and unlimited recycling are collected once per week.
  • Days of Service: Collection is scheduled Monday through Friday. Your specific collection day is assigned based on your neighborhood.

See "Service Delays & Holiday Schedule" tab below for more information.

Sorting Your Items: Alternatives to Trash

Before throwing something away, please consider if there might be a healthier way of getting rid of it. You can help us keep our environment clean by:

Cutting down what we send to the landfill helps the environment and makes a difference in your daily life:

  • Save Money - Less waste means lower trash costs for you and your community, and using recycled or reused materials can reduce the price of products you buy.
  • Healthier Air and Water - Diverting waste reduces pollution, which means cleaner air to breathe and safer water to drink for you and your family.
  • Better Community Spaces - Less trash in landfills and streets keeps your neighborhood cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable.
  • Useful Compost for Your Garden - Composting food scraps can give you nutrient-rich soil for your garden or yard, helping you grow healthy plants at home.
  • Protect the Future - By reducing, reusing, and recycling, you’re helping ensure your community and family have a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for years to come.

Sorting Your Trash: What Goes Where

We understand that it can get confusing knowing how to organize your trash, and we’re here to help. If you have identified that your items should be thrown in the trash, follow these directions:

These items should be bagged in your cart:

  • Household Trash: Food waste, packaging, and general rubbish.
  • Small Items: Small appliances, toys, and small tools.
  • The items below, as long as they’re prepared correctly

Items that need special preparation:

To protect our collection crews, these items require extra care:

  • Animal Waste: Must be double bagged (a bag placed within another bag).
  • Sharp Objects (Glass, Needles, Syringes): Must be clearly labeled and placed in a hard plastic or metal container before being put into a trash bag.
  • Liquids: Trash must not contain liquids. Pour soft drinks, water, or juices down the drain before disposal.

Items that we can’t accept:

  • Any bag weighing more than 40 lbs
  • Anything longer than 4 ft (about the length of a broom)
  • Large amounts of construction debris (more than 500 lbs)
    • What to do instead: call a private waste management company
  • Non-hazardous liquids
    • What to do instead: pour down the drain
  • Hazardous materials
    • What to do instead: Drop it off with the Hazardous Waste Program or NCAP cleanup events that feature HHW disposal

Handling Extra Trash

We know life can get busy and trash can pile up. Extra bags can be collected as long as each has a special tag.

  • Limit: We will collect up to two (2) extra bags of trash per week. Place them next to your trash cart.
  • Tags: A pre-paid tag must be securely placed on each extra bag. Bags without a tag will not be collected.
  • Requirements for Extra Bags:
    • Each bag must be fully closed (fastened shut).
