Tips to Stay Safe in Extreme Heat
- Drink plenty of water - don’t wait until you're thirsty.
- Avoid outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Never leave kids, pets, or vulnerable adults in a vehicle.
- Check in on neighbors, especially older adults or those without air conditioning.
-
Do not use a fan as your primary source of cooling on extremely hot days. If your home does not have air conditioning, please take cool showers, or place cool towels on the neck, arm pits, and head. If possible, please go to an air-conditioned location during the heat of the day.
Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness
Call 911 immediately if someone shows signs of heat stroke:
- Confusion
- Rapid pulse
- Red, hot, dry skin
Keep Pets Safe in the Heat
- Always provide fresh water and shade—or keep pets indoors.
- Avoid walks or exercise during peak heat (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
- Never leave pets in parked cars—it’s dangerous and illegal.
- Watch for signs of overheating: panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting.
- Flat-faced, older, overweight, or sick pets are at greater risk.
- Trim coats to ~1 inch, but don’t shave to the skin—fur protects from sun.
