The Big Heart Tournament

The Big Heart Tournament brings together soccer lovers of all ages to enjoy the sport they love so much. Located at the 9th & Van Brunt Soccer Park in Kansas City's Historic Northeast brings focus to the City's most diverse neighborhood. Children as young as 8 and people as old as 65 will have the opportunity to play and celebrate our strong soccer community.

Also in the heart of the Historic Northeast, KC Parks brings people together to watch the World Cup at the new soccer fields at 9th & Van Brunt.

Art Highlights around Kansas City

Wornall Road Bridge and “Married Love” Statue Improvements ($1.4M)

Stretching over Brush Creek and connecting to The Plaza, Wornall Road Bridge and the accompanying bronze figures of Sir Winston and Lady Clementine Churchill are receiving the following repairs and improvements ahead of World Cup:

  • Repairs to all displaced sidewalk surfaces, and replace paver bricks.
  • Repair damaged bridge elements – such as railing, barriers, curbs, and concrete ribbons.
  • Bring all curb ramps to ADA compliance.
  • Repair all decorative lights and under-rail lighting, and replace planters on the bridge.
  • Removal of railing planter near the “Married Love” statue and install new railing to match the bridge rating.
  • Base repairs to the “Married Love” statue

“The Scout” Statue Area Improvements

Prominently positioned at the top of a hill in Penn Valley Park, “The Scout,” an iconic Native American memorial overlooking the City, is receiving several improvements to the surrounding area, such as:

  • Replacing existing walkways with new concrete trails, and creating additional sidewalk around the base.
  • New tuckpoint and mortar cap on the stone base of the statue.
  • Removing and grading unused roadway at Southeast point of
  • the site.
  • Installation of new curbs, bollards, crosswalk, and ADA ramps.
  • Reseeding of all grass areas impacted by construction.

 Tejiendo Redes (Weaving Nets)

Experience the work of renowned Mexican visual artist Betsabeé Romero at the Kansas City Convention Center: Tejiendo Redes (Weaving Nets)

Blending contemporary art with folk traditions, the installation is a collaborative celebration of fútbol and its global impact.  

Created with volunteers in coordination with Mattie Rhodes, features of includes: 

  • Two large-scale steel structures shaped like soccer goals 

  • Created in collaboration with volunteer artists at the Mattie Rhodes Center 

  • Installed at opposite ends of the South Plaza Lawn (1509 Central St.) 

  • Featuring 160 metallic figures woven together with gold and red ropes 

One of several public art projects celebrating the global love of football in Kansas City, the installation will be on view at the Convention Center (1509 Central St) from April 24 through July 30. 

The project is made possible through partnerships across greater Kansas City, including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Johnson County Community College, Mattie Rhodes, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Cónsul Titular of Consulmex Kansas City.
